 PALMA

Capital of the Autonomous Community. It contains 50% of the island´s population with more than 350,000 inhabitants. Situated on a bay 20 kilometers wide and 25 kilometers long. The origin of the present settlement was a talayotic village with very strong links with the sea. The toponym dates from Roman times. The Arabs, in the 10th century erected Medina Mayurka walls, and in 1229 it was conquered by King James 1, who provided it with a municipality that extended over all theisland, the reason for it being called the Ciutat de Mallorca. The special city´s layout, with a watercourse going through it, gave rise to the Vila de Dalt and the Vila dÁvall as urban centers of opulation, siutated on each of its banks. AT the beginning of the sixteenth centure, the plague, the foreign rebellions and the frequent attacks by the Turkish and Berber priates caused a reduction in the trade activities and the city entered a perio dof declione which lasted until the end of the seventeenth centure. In the eighteenth centure Philip V´s decree de Nova Planta modified the whol island´s governing regime, converting Palma into the new province´s capital and it is in this centure when Charles III, ith the easing of restrictions on  Indias trade, led Mallorca to an increase in the city´s trade and port activities. The French occupation of Argelia in the ninettenth centure finished with the danger of Maghrebi attacks in Mallorca, and this helped expand the maritime and shipping lines, and therefore, improve the city´s economy, which increase demographically due to the birth of new centers of population. The beginning of the tourist phenomenon int eh second half of the twentieth century changs the city and whole island´s appearance becoming an appealing spot for visitors and a center of sociological exchange of cultures. The travellers who arrive to Palma can gaze at a scene containing all the sights they must vitis, as the Castell de Bellver, Sa Llonja, Lálmudaina, the Spanish queen and king´s official residence during their summer visits, and the cathedral, in the gothic style. The city hall is a good sample of the Mallorcan baroque and very close to it, Santa Eulalia´s church rises, the first christian one built in Palma, and an outstanding example of the Catalan gothic. In most recent Palma stands out the modernis buildings of Weyler Square, especially the Gran Hotel.
