Majorca
January 2008 james please send you posts to mallorca@easy.com
Majorca (or mallorca) is one of the Balearics three Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The official language of Majorca is Catalan and the second being Spanish.
More new visitors are attracted by its stunning natural coastline and warm seas and rustic interior. In 1963 visitors numbered 500,500. In 1998 they numbered 6,839,700 visitors and in 2001 the airport recorded 19,400,000 through the airport and 1.4 million arriving by sea. The islands are also popular with celebrities and football stars including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas and Claudia Schiffer, Suzi Quattro, Jenson Button even Boris Becker amongst others. Unlike mainland Spain Mallorca is a thriving, secure and well loved island in the sun! With its own government, own systems and independence from the Spanish mainland systems - it should not be compared with the Costas!
To cope with all the visitors there has been a great deal of investment in the infrastructure of motorways schools and hospitals. Palma de Mallorca Airport is the largest airport in Spains Mediterranean seas - Madrid Barajas and Barcelona El Prat are neck and neck also to be the largest. It currently has a capacity for 24.7 million passengers per year or 11,800 per hour. There are plans to increase the passenger capacity to 30 million passengers in 2012 and 40 million passengers in 2016. New roads are also being built and old ones refurbished, although great care is being taken not to impact too highly on the scenery and natural landscapes. Visitors are advised to make sure their maps are new as the road numbers have been changed.
Majorca is a safe place for visitors with only very minor crime which can be easily avoided with a few sensible precautions. However tourists should beware of pickpockets in Palma de mallorca city and supermarket car parks - it doesn´t happen often, but it is well tobe aware. Just ask James! he will advise you on the few trouble spots or how tourists are spotted and targetted particularly when they are in public busy areas. It is simple! don´t do what you wouldn´t do at home - don´t leave your valuables on view in the car! make sure you have your handbag and purse tucked under your arm in any crowded place and don´t leave it in your shopping basket!
What has Majorca to offer for the future visitors to Mallorca? It has outstanding coves and beach areas offering all types of water sport theme rides.
There are also mountainous areas of the islands offering spectacular views from castles and monastery's. Many visitors choose to walk or cycle or alternatively hire a car for the week. There are great sites open every day a great deal to search for and find.

If you are interested in rocks and primeval geo subjects you can follow coastal pathways through tunnels in the cliffs to the amazing limestone gorges at Torrente de Pareis - the caves are also incredible - go and visit the Caves of Drach, The Caves of Hames also Caves or Arta. You will find at the Caves of Drach four large chambers with thousands of stalactites showering down. They do great tours, sometimes with music and underground boat trips.
You must not miss the ‘culture vulture’ mecca of Palma de Mallorca! You will love the Cathedral of Palma built by Jaime 1st with a few touches added by the great Gaudi in the 20th century, there is also Bellver Castle with its splendid views across the Bay of Palma or visit the Royal Carthusian Monastry housing a number of museum displays. There you will find the monk’s cell where Frederic Chopin and George Sand stayed for a time.
For the artists and art lovers amongst you Joan Miro spent his last years in Majorca on the island of Mallorca. You can pay a visit to his cultural and art centre set up in his name the Pilar i Joan Miro a Mallorca Foundation. The shops rival the best of any European city centre, with excellent plazas, cafés and restaurants, chill out lounges and nightlife to suit every possible taste - it is easy to see why Palma is one of the fastest growing European cities.
Of course Mallorca appeals to the younger set as well with the holiday tourist industry offering holidays tailored to young 20 pluses The nightlife is concentrated around a stretch of bars know as ‘the strip’ and is in the high rise west of the island of Mallorca which also suffers with some traffic smog at times. Places to go take your children for the day to Aqualand or the Western Water Park, the latter geared towards younger children. There is also Marineland with dolphins, sharks, penguins and sea lions. The Jungle Park offers adventure courses. There are several karting tracks on the island of Mallorca there is a super main track just outside the airport. also in the east via Mancor is the large Zoo to be found near Porto Cristo. The new Aquarium just outside of Palma is considered to be one of the world´s best built, and is well worth a visit.
Mallorca is a spacial favourite with golfers as it offers 18 golf courses with more under construction. If you’d like to buy a your own Mallorca property near to your favourite golf course there are plenty of real estate properties on offer, which would make sound investments- distressed property has not arrive in Mallorca due to the shortage of land. Building is also strictly controlled in the east with an emphasis on low rise buildings so that the views are not spoiled like other areas in mainland Spain. Val d´Or Golf is the main eastern course, set on the hillsides below the Monaster of San Salvador the club house has splendid panoramic views along the eastern coast above Porto Colom, Cala d´Or, Cala Ferrera and beyond.
Do you like pork, fish, lamb (surprisingly often imported but not in the east and south of Majorca) and vegetables?well Mallorcan style cuisine is based largely on them. They are cooked with garlic and the very best olive oil with fresh pan (bread). There is something for everyone in Majorca whether it’s a sporting holiday you want or just to take in the beautiful local scenery. It is therefore ideal for families trying to accommodate a varied holiday or to find a new place to live for everyone in the family. A place for best value great life style quality homes and property to suit all ages and european persons German, French, Dutch and English properties large and small, town and country! A healthy lifestyle, superb settings, marvellous food and sun, sun, sun. and great shops too.
