Along the unspoilt eastern coast of Mallorca lies the beautiful bay of Porto Colom with its natural habour, sandy beaches and open-air cafes, restaurants and excellent shops. A few miles inland, the atmospheric medieval town of Calonge, with its award winning restaurants, Cascina and Bodega plus the Bona Taula, which has been voted best restaurant for four consecutive seasons, is also well worth exploring, not to mention the famous Bar Telefono. Why not escape to Calonge this year and let yourself in on one of Europe's best-kept secrets?.
Drive directly from Palma leaving behind the high-rise blocks of hotels and apartments with their thousands of tourists, and in around 40mins you will discover this wonderful part of Mallorca.
Mountain peaks more reminiscent of Austria than Spain, hill-top villages, exquisite seascapes, fabulous sandy beaches and the small resorts of Cala Sanau and Cala Marcal with white sands in horse shoe bays. You'll find delightful pavement cafes, great shops and good restaurants and an excellent selection of water sports, golf courses, tennis courts, horse-riding and evening entertainment. The breathtaking views across the coast to Cala d´or from the Castilo castle and monastery of San Salvador are not to be missed, and the stunningly beautiful Formentor peninsula, a favourite holiday location for Europe's rich and famous for generations can also be seen on the horizon. The views on this part of the island will stay with you forever, a photographers dream..
Driving time from Palma airport is approximately 40 minutes.
Porto Colom - surrounded by Calonge, S´Horta, Sa Punta .
Once a small fishing village  Porto or Potocolom harbour, is now a magnificent bay filled with yachts and traditional fishing boats with a 1.5-mile seafront promenade. The views across the bay to rugged headlands and light house are exceptionally beautiful. On the other side of the bay are pine walks & pretty beaches sheltered by coves and pine trees stretching round the horseshoe bay.
Porto colom sandy beaches are protected by natural breakwaters and so are ideal for children and the disabled, whether walking or wheelchair (hire or rental).
There is a wide range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets (Sa Llotja, Es Dos, HPC, Colon, El Campo), including several of the best fish restaurants on the island as well as a good variety of boutiques and shops.
There is a relaxed atmosphere here with no loud discos or nightclubs, although there are several English and Irish bars for entertainment in the evenings, situated in the pretty square with many nights of free entertainment in the months of June July Aug Sept. Nearby Cala d´or has its famous yearly jazz festival in late May and early June. Buses and tours run regularly to other parts of the island and Palma is easily accessible for department store shopping!
 Bars food villas close by.
Also close by is the stunning natural reserve of Cala Mondrago, with beautiful walks, sheltered pine covered picnic areas and a stunning length of white sand, all edged with secluded rocky coves. This is a well preserved and visually stunning area - popular with walkers, bathers and photographers alike. A small tourist train can also be used to transport you regularly back and forth the eastern beaches of Mondrago, with its small cafés and restaurant and from where you can also begin several walks along the coast or through the pine forest.
Famous visitors to Porto colom include Rod Stewart, Boris Becker, Claudi Schiffer and many other stars of sport, TV and film.
Cala San Vicente cheap walking holidays
Cala San Vicente is one of the best-kept secrets on Mallorca. It's a quiet and relaxed resort surrounded by mountains whose pine-covered slopes run down to the sea. The spectacular countryside here is ideal walking country, popular with ramblers and painters & there's a wonderful coastal walk from here to Puerto Pollenca, ideal for an afternoon's outing. The sparkling blue waters and sandy coves are very child-friendly. Cala San Vicente is an ideal place for a day at the beach. This resort is approximately one hours drive from Poto colom and five miles from Puerto Pollenca.
Pollenca appartments rentals holiday lettings.
Pollenca is a peaceful and tranquil town that remains very typically Spanish. It's four miles from the coast, nestling between two hills at the eastern end of the Tramuntana mountains. One of these hills is Puig de Maria with an 18th-century monastery perched on the summit & a walk to the top is well worth the effort for the spectacular views over Pollenca and down to the sea.
Pollenca itself is indisputably pretty. There are twisting medieval streets and pastel-painted houses in the centre and Moorish looking water mills on the outskirts. It's also a haven for sleepy Mallorcan traditions & cafe life and the siesta roll on as they always have. Here the buildings lining the narrow streets are full of history with their ochre roofs, sun-baked walls and wooden shutters.
The heart of the old town is the central square, Plaça Major, where there are lots of cafe-bars and fine restaurants. It's especially lively on market day, every Sunday morning, with stalls selling fruit, flowers, local crafts, clothes and household goods. Local cheeses and roasted almonds are particularly good buys.
Pollenca also has numerous galleries selling Mallorcan art and design, and a town museum with collections of Spanish Gothic art and contemporary art and ceramics.
The most famous walk in Pollenca is up the 365 steps of the tree-lined 'Calvario' & the Calvari Hill. There is a tiny church at the top with amazing views over the town and wooded valleys to the sea. And, according to tradition the punishing climb itself will absolve you of a year's worth of sins.

Festivals.  San Salvador. (monastery.)
There are a variety of historic and colourful festivals in and around Calonge and Porto colom. The most important of the year is the week-long art and music fiesta La Calonge held either at the end of Sept or in the beginning of August. In mid August is the festival of Santa Maria del Mar, which  is celebrated with a fantastic midnight firework display across the marinas of Porto Colom and Cala d´Or. In July is the procession of decorated tuna fishing boats - finishing on the beaches of Sa Punta, near Port Colom - called Sopar de Penyas. At the beginning of May each year is the festival of Ses Salines - which brings clowns, live bands, dog shows, puppeteers, Columbian street music, drums and restaurants galore. In the middle of may is the medieval market of Capdepera - a marvellous celebration of history, costumery and food through the ages - a gastronomic treat! In between times are the numerous local village festivals and fayres including the massive street bar-b-qs of S´Alqueria Blanca in April - the dog shows and racing displays of S´Horta - the vintage car rallys of Felantix and Manacor.

Another central event is a mock battle between Moors and Christians which commemorates a real battle that took place in 1550 when Pollenca was attacked by 1500 north African pirate raiders. Today, the mock battle follows the route of the original battle along the streets of the old town. Pollenca people, dressed up in 16th-century costume, fight with wooden sticks and old farm implements and by the end of the evening the 'pirates' are defeated and driven away back to the sea.
Cala D'Or (via Calonge) 2 hourly bus service to Palma de mallorca.
The smart resort of Cala d'Or is 3.5  km from Calonge and 6km frm Porto Colom. It is part of the municipal district of Santanyi, on the southern half of the east coast of Majorca. Although as the crow flies the town is only around 61km, or 38 miles east of Palma.
Although most visitors to the area used to be on traditional package holidays, more visitors are now making their own arrangements, reserving their own private villa and pre-booked hire car. There are many local small and large supermarkets such as Caprabo and Syp Eroski, Mercadona and Lidl.
Cala d'Or today is a modern purpose built resort that has grown from a small traditional Mallorcan fishing village. Over the years the resort has expanded, and now covers an area of over 4km of small sandy coves and creeks. Although in all fairness, this growth has for the most part been controlled, and the town still has the feeling of a small village with few, if any, high rise buildings.

The recently built Yacht Club Cala d´Or Country Club has brought the panache and style of a luxury members club to the marina Cala d´Or. Its renowned CaLa Vista restaurant is open to non-members each day except Sunday. With millions of pounds of luxury yachts (some available to rent, hire or charter for the season), on display in front of the many other restaurants, cafe´s and bars - the marina has become a magnet for the good life.

The largest of the Cala d´Or coves is called Cala Llonga, which has been developed into a large marina that effectively splits the resort in two. The focal point of the town centre is a pedestrian zone around the area of Cala Gran, which has a varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants. Due to the positive growth it´s popular place to rent apartments, bars and first business ventures - with quality build and lower property values and the cheapest purchase price for property in Santanyi area it draws the rich and not so rich, for investment or lifestyle changes.

The beach at Cala Gran is the largest in the town, and is close to Cala d'Or centre. This is a pine fringed cove with a small busy beach. Sun loungers, parasols and pedaloes can be hired at both of these beaches. In addition, there is also around 8 or 9 other smaller sandy coves in the area, some of which can only be reached by car.

Many visitors take the morning bus to Es Trenc. This beautiful beach of clear blue water and golden sand, backed by pine trees and dunes, stretches for almost 5km along the wild south eastern coast of the island. There's a small bar-restaurant here and you can hire sun umbrellas, but there are few other facilities and the beach rarely gets packed with bodies. Be warned though, Es Trenc is popular with  naturist's and the bodies that you do see are likely to be bare!
